MGT5024 PESTLE Strategic Analysis Report Sample (Sunway)

For information and reference only – not to be submitted as your own work.

This MGT5024 sample answer shows how an abridged Part 1 report could look when the chosen company is Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), a Bursa Malaysia-listed energy firm. It follows the tasks in the Sunway MGT5024 Strategic Management and Analysis Assessment 1 brief: a short introduction with the current business-level strategy, then a prioritised PESTLE analysis. If you want the method behind it, read our guide on how to write an MGT5024 PESTLE strategic analysis report.

Part 1A: MGT5024 sample introduction and business-level strategy

Company and strategic context

Tenaga Nasional Berhad is Malaysia’s largest electricity utility and a Bursa Malaysia-listed company. Government-linked investment companies hold more than 60% of its shares (TNB, 2026a). For the year ended 31 December 2025 it reported earnings of RM4.8 billion and paid a total dividend of 53 sen per share (TNB, 2026a).

Its strategic context is unusual. Tariffs and allowed returns are set by the regulator, yet demand is changing quickly because of digitalisation, electrification and national decarbonisation goals. TNB says it spent about RM12 billion in 2025 on supply security, demand growth and energy transition projects (TNB, 2026b).

Current business-level strategy

TNB’s management frames its direction as “Reimagining Tenaga 2.0”, built on four pillars: clean generation, an energy transition network, dynamic energy solutions and regulatory evolution (TNB, 2026c). This report interprets that as a differentiation strategy inside a regulated cost base. TNB cannot win by price, because tariffs are regulated, so it competes on reliability and on being the grid partner for low-carbon demand (Whittington et al., 2020).

The evidence supports this reading. System minutes were 0.15 against a global benchmark of under 1.5, and the average interruption duration (SAIDI) improved from 47.88 to 46.93 minutes (TNB, 2026a). This classification is the author’s analytical judgement, not a label TNB uses.

Part 1B: Macro-environmental analysis

All six PESTLE headings could be covered, but the brief does not require it. The table shows the screening used here: factors were ranked by how directly they change TNB’s strategic choices. The ranking is a judgement for this extract. Social and legal factors are folded into the political discussion to save words.

Factor Evidence Impact on strategy Priority
Political and legal: regulation and energy policy Regulatory Period 4 tariff reset from 1 July 2025; automatic fuel adjustment; national transition roadmap Sets allowed returns, capex room and the pace of renewables High
Economic OPR at 2.75%; growth above 5% in 2026; ringgit strengthening Financing cost, demand growth, foreign exchange effects High
Technological Data centre demand; smart meters; grid modernisation Drives network investment and new customer segments High
Environmental Renewable capacity share and 2050 targets Shapes generation mix and asset risk Medium to high
Social Affordability and service expectations Limits tariff headroom; supports service differentiation Medium

Political and legal: regulation sets the strategic envelope

The Energy Commission’s tariff schedule for Regulatory Period 4 took effect on 1 July 2025 and runs to 31 December 2027. It set a base average tariff of 45.4 sen/kWh and replaced the imbalance cost pass-through with an automatic fuel adjustment that moves the generation charge with fuel prices and exchange rates (Chan, 2025).

This matters strategically for two reasons. First, a defined period gives TNB visibility to commit long-lived grid capex. Second, the new mechanism lowers the risk of fuel-cost shocks sitting unrecovered on its balance sheet. TNB itself lists “regulatory evolution” as a strategic pillar (TNB, 2026c).

Policy also sets direction. Malaysia’s renewable capacity share reached 31% by December 2025 and was nearly 32% by June 2026, against a 2050 target of 70% (Malay Mail, 2026). A single dominant policy signal like this makes TNB’s clean generation pillar a compliance and growth necessity, not an option.

Economic: stable rates and strong growth, with currency exposure

Bank Negara Malaysia held the Overnight Policy Rate at 2.75% on 5 November 2026 and projected 2026 growth above 5%, with inflation expected to stay contained (Bank Negara Malaysia, 2026). For a capital-intensive utility, a stable rate environment keeps the cost of funding its grid programme predictable. Strong growth supports electricity demand.

Currency matters too. TNB recorded a foreign exchange gain of RM652 million in 2025 as the ringgit moved from RM4.471 to RM4.057 per US dollar (TNB, 2026b). That gain is helpful but not operational, so it should not be treated as a durable profit source. It does show that imported fuel and dollar debt expose earnings to exchange-rate swings.

Technological: data centres reshape the demand profile

TNB reports that demand growth is driven mainly by data centres, with roughly 7.5 GW of maximum demand secured across 56 projects (TNB, 2026c). It also reports about 5.6 million smart meters installed and has signed a 785 MWp corporate renewable energy supply agreement for data centre customers (TNB, 2026a; TNB, 2026c).

The strategic implication is a shift from selling units to supplying high-reliability, low-carbon power to large digital customers. This favours the differentiation reading in Part 1A, because these customers pay for dependability and green supply, not the cheapest tariff.

Environmental and social: transition risk and licence to operate

Environmental pressure shows in project choices such as hybrid hydro-floating solar at Kenyir and green hydrogen work at Jimah East (TNB, 2026a). TNB has also said it aims for net zero emissions intensity by 2050 under a long-term energy transition plan with roughly RM20 billion of annual investment (The Vibes, 2022). That 2022 figure is an older announcement, so check the latest annual report before relying on it.

The social factor is affordability and service. Tariff changes touch millions of households, which limits how far TNB can pass on costs. In response, TNB highlights record customer satisfaction and community spending of more than RM232.3 million in 2025 (TNB, 2026a).

Implications for strategy, performance, opportunities and threats

Area Implication
Strategy Keep differentiating on reliability and clean supply; the regulatory period supports long-horizon grid investment
Performance Earnings are supported by stable rates and demand, but exposed to fuel, currency and regulatory resets
Opportunities Data centre supply, grid modernisation, renewables and regional interconnection
Threats Policy or tariff change after 2027, stranded fossil assets, affordability pushback, concentration of demand in one customer type

Overall, the external environment currently favours TNB’s strategy more than it threatens it, but the benefit rests on regulation. The most important watch point is the next regulatory period from 2028, which will decide whether today’s investment pace remains rewarded (Chan, 2025; Whittington et al., 2020). A fuller answer would test this with a second framework such as Porter’s five forces, which examines industry structure rather than the wider environment (Porter, 2008).

This extract is abridged. A full submission needs your own chosen company, current figures checked against its latest annual report, and APA 7th formatting to your university’s rules.
