MGT5024 Assessment 1 is the first half of a two-part strategic analysis. Students choose one publicly listed Malaysian company in technology, consumer goods or energy, introduce its current strategic position and business-level strategy, and then evaluate its macro-environment with PESTLE. The same company carries into Assessment 2, so the choice needs enough public information for both reports.

Instructions

Select a publicly traded company from the technology, consumer goods or energy industry in Malaysia. The company should have a significant market presence and a publicly available annual report. The same company will be used in Assessment 2, so choose it with this continuation in mind and make sure enough public information is available to support both assessments.

Part 1A: Introduction

Provide a concise introduction to the company and its current strategic context. Avoid unnecessary company history.
Briefly explain the current business-level strategy used by the company.

Part 1B: Macro-Environmental Analysis

Evaluate the external environment of your chosen company using the PESTLE framework. Your analysis should:

Identify and prioritise the most strategically significant external factors from the relevant PESTLE dimensions (you do not need to cover all six).
Explain how these factors influence the company and its strategic decisions.
Integrate the findings to evaluate their implications for the company’s strategy, performance, opportunities and threats.
Support the evaluation with current, relevant evidence from credible company, industry, regulatory and/or academic sources.

Submission Guidelines

Submit a Word document: Times New Roman 12, single spacing, 1-inch margins on A4.
Name the file: Programme name_Student ID_Full Name_Course Code_SL Name_Assessment Number.
Include a cover page with name, student ID, subject code and title and deadline, plus the SBS Assessment Cover Page and AI Declaration.
Use APA 7th referencing with no footnotes; charts, financials and visuals go in the report itself, not the appendices. Any use of generative AI must be acknowledged.
After submitting on XLearn, the Turnitin similarity index must be no more than 15%.

Marking Rubric

Introduction (20 marks): concise, strategically focused introduction with a clear explanation of the current business-level strategy.
Macro-environmental analysis (70 marks): prioritised, well-justified PESTLE factors integrated into an evidence-based evaluation of strategy, performance, opportunities and threats.
Written skills and professional presentation (10 marks): professional, coherent writing with accurate APA 7th referencing.
