The final-year Research Project for SEGi’s Bachelor of Mass Communication requires a supervised five-chapter thesis, from proposal and pilot testing to data analysis, with clear rules on field access, ethics and formatting.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to develop a focused research area drawn from an evaluation of the discipline and its ethical dimensions; devise a detailed and comprehensive research strategy; resolve comprehensive research through autonomous work and student–supervisor debate; and present it as a coherent written study (or practical outcome) within the discipline.
Choosing a Project and Working with a Supervisor
- Choose a topic linked to your specialisation or experience; check that it has not already been answered elsewhere and that it is viable in time and resources.
- Email the coordinator a short research proposal; the faculty then assigns a supervisor.
- Keep regular contact with the supervisor and send drafts in advance – supervisors have one week to give feedback. A student who fails to progress may be moved to another supervisor or to independent work after consultation with the Dean.
Planning Field Activities
- Obtain written permission from any organisation where you will collect data and include the approval letter in the final report.
- For employee interviews, agree procedures, questions, timing and location with the Head of HR so that operations and productivity are not affected; share questions and records if requested.
- Mall intercepts need written permission from the mall operator. Participation is voluntary and respondents may withdraw at any time.
Thesis Structure (Five Chapters)
- Introduction: background, statement of the research problem, research questions and objectives, significance, scope, operational definitions.
- Literature Review: past findings by objective, related theories or models, conceptual framework and hypotheses (quantitative).
- Methodology: research design, population and sampling, measurement of variables, reliability and validity (pilot testing), data collection and analysis procedures.
- Data Analysis and Discussion: respondent demographics, results by objective with tables and graphs, statistical outcomes and discussion linked to theory and past research.
- Conclusion: summary, conclusion, academic and practical implications, recommendations and future research.
Format and Integrity
- 5,000–10,000 words (excluding front matter, references and appendices); Times New Roman 12, double spacing; APA 7th edition.
- Follow all supervisor comments; fabrication, falsification and plagiarism are academic misconduct subject to disciplinary action.

Mass communication theses at SEGi often stall between the approved proposal and Chapter 4: the pilot test is rushed, the questionnaire does not map cleanly onto the research objectives, and results are reported without linking back to theories such as agenda-setting or uses and gratifications. Keeping objectives, hypotheses, instrument items and analysis tables aligned makes supervisor feedback easier to act on. Our thesis writing service in Malaysia can guide chapter structure and APA 7 referencing. See the earlier KMC4414 research methods proposal brief and more SEGi University assignment questions.
