Case Study: Ergonomic Issues at SwiftCart Fulfilment Centre
SwiftCart is a rapidly growing e-commerce company that operates several fulfilment centres across Southeast Asia. One of its largest facilities is located in Shah Alam, Malaysia, where approximately 250 employees work in order picking, packing, and shipping operations. The facility operates continuously using rotating shifts to meet increasing customer demand. Employees perform tasks such as retrieving products from storage racks, packing items, and transporting goods between different workstations.
Aina, a warehouse worker, retrieves items from storage shelves and places them on packing tables. Many items are stored either above shoulder height or near the floor, requiring her to frequently reach upward or bend down during her shift. Meanwhile, Ravi works at the packing station where he scans items, seals boxes, and places packages onto conveyor belts. His job requires him to stand for long hours while performing repetitive hand movements. Some employees are also responsible for transporting goods between departments using trolleys and pallet jacks. One of these workers, Farid, reported experiencing lower back discomfort after pushing heavily loaded carts across the warehouse floor.
Recently, the human resource department recorded an increase in complaints related to muscle fatigue, back pain, shoulder discomfort, and wrist strain. Concerned about these issues, the safety officer suggested that the current workstation layout and work practices may expose employees to ergonomic hazards which could lead to long-term health problems if not addressed. Figures 1, 2, and 3 illustrate different workstation layouts within the warehouse.

Prepare a report addressing the following:
a. Introduction (Include the purpose, context, and direction of the report based on the given scenario).
b. Analyse the ergonomic hazards present in the workplace based on the case and the workstation layouts shown in Figure 1, 2, and 3.
c. Evaluate the effects of poor ergonomic design on both employees and the organisation.
d. Recommend four (4) strategies that SwiftCart can implement to improve ergonomic conditions and reduce workplace hazards.
