Late submission will incur a mark penalty unless an extension has been approved (see your Student Handbook on Moodle for details).
You are required to choose ONE of the following cases below and write a report with a maximum of 1,500 words. Â
Over the past few years, many restaurants in Malaysia have reported increasing difficulties in managing their costs. The prices of raw ingredients significantly rise due to global supply chain disruptions and local currency depreciation. Utility costs, such as electricity and water, have also increased, while higher minimum wages have raised labour expenses.
As a result, many restaurants have been forced to raise menu prices. Customers, however, are highly sensitive to price changes, and some have reduced their frequency of dining out. This has created tension between maintaining profitability and keeping food affordable for consumers.
Question:
Using both microeconomic and macroeconomic perspectives, analyse how rising prices affect restaurants in Malaysia and their customers. In your answer, explain the concepts of scarcity, demand and supply, cost-push inflation, and government policies such as subsidies and wage regulations. Discuss how restaurant-level decisions (micro) interact with national economic policies and inflationary pressures (macro) in shaping the overall cost of living in Malaysia.
In recent years, trade tensions between the United States and several countries have led to the imposition of tariffs on imported goods. Suppose the United States introduces higher tariffs on key Malaysian exports, such as palm oil, rubber products, or electronic components.
Question:
Using economic theories, analyse the potential impact of US tariffs on Malaysia’s economy. In your answer, discuss the short-term and long-term effects on Malaysian exporters (firms), local producers, consumers, and the overall macroeconomic environment. Apply concepts of demand and supply, comparative advantage, balance of trade, and government policy responses. Provide examples to illustrate how tariffs imposed by a major trading partner like the US could influence both microeconomic decision-making and macroeconomic outcomes in Malaysia.
Students should prepare and submit their coursework assessments via Moodle in the following format:
