GUIDELINES  For INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

This guideline aims to guide and assist students in performing industrial training and the academic writing process of industrial training report. Students pursuing the Bachelor of PSYCHOLOGY with Honours (BPSY) programme are required to undertake at least 12 weeks of Industrial Training – ABPP4406 (in the semester they registered). The Industrial Training carries a total of 6 credit units. Students can do their industrial training at their workplace or out of their organization (that is deemed suitable by the programme director “PD”). For retirees and house-wife who had been working before could select one particular organisation/NGO/community setting to perform their industrial training or to produce their industrial training report based on previous working experience with some evident such as appointment letter, photo and letter of support from their former employer.

The Industrial Training for Bachelor of PSYCHOLOGY (BPSY) programme is designed to provide practical exposure in the real working environment. Besides, it will enable students to develop and enhance their skills and understand the application of psychology at workplace. The industrial training has to be done in any business corporation, government agency, NGO, education setting and community setting. It is a compulsory course.

Upon completion of the placement, students are required to submit supervisor evaluation form, a log book and Industrial Training Report which outlining the activities undertaken during the placement. Students have to record all activities weekly for the whole placement period in the log book and this needs to be verified by their Supervisor. The final Industrial Training report will be evaluated by an examiner from OUM.

Objective of the industrial training 

The objective of this course is to expose the students to real situation of working environment so that they can develop their skill as an IT Professional and apply what has been learnt throughout the programme.

Learning Outcomes

 By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Apply psychological principles and content and skills to career goals
  2. Exhibit pleasant interpersonal skills as an individual in working independently, collaborative and in multi-disciplinary team
  3. Practice good working ethics and quality delivery of project undertaken

Industrial Placement

Students who expect to undergo Industrial Training course at the end of the programme need to apply and obtain an industrial placement on their own initiative. If required, an undertaking letter from OUM can be obtained from the Administrative Assistant to support the application for a placement. Once a placement is obtained, students MUST submit a registration form to RPMU. RPMU will assist to get approval from the respective organisation and university before student can proceed for the training.

Student’s Responsibility

It is strictly required that the student is responsible for obtaining an industrial placement for a minimal period of 12 working weeks (consecutively) and 480 working hours.

In a situation without any public holidays and leaves taken by the student during the training period, the requirement above should normally be fulfilled according to the following calculation:

Working hours:         8.30am to 5.30pm = 9hrs – 1hr lunch = 8hrs

Working days:           Monday to Friday

Total hours:               12 weeks x 5 days x 8 hours = 480 hours

However, if there are any public holidays and leaves taken by the student during the training period, they should not be counted as working hours.

Therefore, in this case, the student must compensate any shortage of working hours in order to fulfil the minimal period of 12 working weeks (consecutively) and the 480 working hours as

In the current situation such as Covid Pandemic period, work from home is considered as formal working day.

Industrial Placement Approval

For an Industrial Training to be valid, the proposed placement must be approved by the university or administrator BEFORE the training starts. The approval is judged based on the relevancy of training plan to be conducted, workplace attached and training duration.

Thus, students shall proceed the Industrial Training placement by submitting the TRAINING REGISTRATION FORM as in APPENDIX C a week before Tutorial 1(IT) begins on the academic calendar of the University to the Administrative Assistant from RPMU via email. The RPMU will process the form by getting the administrator for the approval. RPMU will notify the student about the status of the registration via email to the student. Do refer to Figure 1. For further details of Registration procedure.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Student has to inform the administrative assistant of RPMU immediately if their placement is different from the registration form.

Industrial Training Log Book

Students should refer to TRAINING LOG BOOK as given.          All the training content/activities need to be recorded on a daily basis. The logbook is kept as:

  • A reflection of the student’s learning and experience during the industrial training;
  • Training records and evidences for supervisor and Advisor reference.
  • Part of professional practice in IT profession where incidence and evidence are recorded in proper documentation.
  • Source of reference to prepare the Industrial Training Report. The log book must be submitted together with the Industrial Training Report.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The log book should be signed by the supervisor/head on a weekly basis.

The log book should be recorded on a daily basis.

Industrial Training Report

An industrial training report should be prepared upon completion of training. The report is a compiled writing that demonstrates student’s learning and participation in the workplace or organisation. The training report should also reflect a student’s ability in communicating IT context such as planning, organising, coordinating and implementing, participation and decision making in a clear and concise manner through the reports.

Students should seek advice from their employers to ensure that no confidential materials are included in the report. The student should be able to present the report to the employers if needed. Any references made in preparation of the report should be recognised using standard APA 6threferencing formats. Students are advised to give a serious consideration in writing their report. The report must be written in good quality which explain all industrial experience and knowledge gained.

Student should refer to the REPORT WRITING GUIDELINE as given in APPENDIX A to prepare their report. A copy of the Industrial Training Report and Training Log Book should be submitted to the university by softcopy through Google form provided

Industrial Training Evaluation

The industrial training will be evaluated by Site Supervisor/head (30%) and programme director or lecturer from OUM (70%) based on the training report and training log book.

Completion of Industrial Training

Upon completion of a training period, SUPERVISOR FEEDBACK FORM (at the workplace), STUDENT FEEDBACK FORM and INDUSTRIAL TRAINING REPORT need to be submitted to the programme director or Lecturer.

Students need to send by softcopy through google form provided. The softcopy should be label with student name and ID number. Training Advisor will finalised all the marks and submit to RPMU. Once ready, the marks will be updated into OUM system. Kindly refer to the student email for further information about report submission.

Section A

General Requirements of the Industrial Training Report

1. Introduction

The purpose of this guideline is to assist students in preparing for and completing their Industrial Training Report. Students are advised to communicate regularly with their respective supervisors for subject matter guidance.

2. Language

The report should be written either in English or Malay language. Writing style should be standardised (mixture of Malay and English or American English and British English is not allowed), formal and easy to understand.

3. Technical specification

The report submitted for grading should be typed using a word processor and printed using laser printer. Students are required to comply with the following requirements:

3.1 Font type and size

The entire text of the report including title and page numbering should be of font size 12 and font type Times New Roman or Arial.

3.2 Margin

Left margin should be set at 40 mm. Top, bottom and right margins should be set at 25 mm. This specification should be adhered to facilitate binding.

3.3 Line Spacing

The report must be double-spaced. Figures and tables should be single- spaced. Quotes of three lines or more must be indented and be single- spaced. Each reference within the References section should be single- spaced. Single-spacing should be used within titles, and within each entry in lists and footnotes.

3.4 Page Numbering

All front matter page numbers must be lower case Roman numerals centred at the bottom of the page. The first page of the front matter after the Title page, is numbered “ii”. There is no page with the number “i”.

The first page of the body of the report is numbered page 1. Student

Should use Arabic numbers. Words, dashes or any other symbols before or after the page number is not allowed. Page numbers font size should be the same as the text of the report. Report page numbers can either be at the:

Top right corner OR

Bottom right corner OR

Bottom centre

Page numbers on landscape-oriented pages must be placed to be consistent with numbering placement you are using in the report. Pages must be numbered consecutively throughout the report.

3.5 Page layout

Text should be typed on a portrait layout. Landscape layout is allowed for tables and figures only.

3.6 Report submission

The report should be submitted to the Research and Project Unit (RPMU) the second semester in the softcopy google form after the completion of industrial training. Kindly refer to the email notification updated from RPMU, for students must save the works log book and reports into format Microsoft Words (1) and PDF (1) file. This Softcopy submission will help the University in its record management system. The soft copy must be submitted to google form RPMU, OUM. Submission through email will be not accepted.

Report Guidelines

1. General guidelines

The report should comprise of the content of written documentation between 4060 pages of written documentation, excluding the front pages (2.1), appendices, and each major chapter title page. Pictures must be supported by the report explanation. Compiling all the pictures/images onto one page is not accepted

2. Chapter organization

The report is a scientific document, hence should comply with a systematic writing sequence as shown below:

2.1 Front section

(a) Cover page should include the following:

    1. Project title
    2. Author’s name
    3. Programme name
    4. Academic session (Semester)

(b) Acknowledgement 

This section allows the author to express gratitude to people and organisations that have assisted in completing the industrial training report successfully.

c) Originality declaration

The author declares that the work carried out in completing the report is original, true to research ethics and without plagiarism.

d) Table of Content

Provides guidance to readers of the main and sub-topics that is discussed in completing the report.

e) List of tables and figures

Title of tables and figures should be written in the same manner as in actual text.

2.2 Main section (Layout of Report format)

b) Organisation background

Briefly describe the organisation or any community setting that you engaged. Describe the department or unit that you get involved.

c) Weekly Report / log book

Present your tasks and activity in the organisation or in the community setting.

  • Submitted weekly reports outlining activities, tasks performed. E.g, engage with customer service (interpersonal skills), attend meeting (communication and decision making and problem solving), involved in family day (teamwork), conduct research (leadership and research) etc.
  • Supporting documents, e.g photos, appendixes, etc

D. related learning outcomes and discussion

  • Description of tasks setting or job scope
  • Report on achievement of task set. Explain what you have done or achieved
  • Limitations and recommendations to organization
  • Your industrial training should include psychological elements such as interpersonal skills, communication skills, leadership, teamwork, presentation, decision making and problem solving, consultation, motivation, research, administration work, documentation, planning, etc.

Formatting the References List

  • If you have referred to various references, start the reference list on a new page, with the word References in the top centre of the page.
  • Arrange the items alphabetically by author (if no author is given, then start with the title).
  • Do not spell out an author’s first or middle name: Shock, P.J. (not Shock, Patti J.).
  • In titles of books, articles, websites, and other major works, only the first words of the title and subtitle are capitalised (except proper nouns, which are still always capitalised): Conferences and conventions: A global industry. However, significant words in the titles of journals, magazines, & newspapers are capitalised: Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research
