Group 6: Technological Capabilities and SME Competitiveness

Analyze how SMEs develop technological capabilities to remain competitive.

C. Assignment 2: Strategic Case Study On Malaysian Semiconductor Company

  • Presentation: 15%
  • Report: 25% (4,500-5,000 words, excluding references and appendices)

Assignment Objectives

This assignment aims to enable students to:

  • Analyze strategic management and planning practices within a semiconductor company in Malaysia.
  • Understand the real-world application of strategic management principles across different departments within a semiconductor firm.
  • Examine how semiconductor companies respond to technological changes, global competition, and supply chain challenges.
  • Develop skills in interviewing, data synthesis, and case study analysis.

Assignment Guidelines

  1. Introduction (Common for All Groups)

Provide an overview of the semiconductor industry in Malaysia, including:

  • The importance of the semiconductor industry to Malaysia’s economy and global supply chains.
  • Malaysia’s role in the global semiconductor ecosystem (e.g., assembly, testing, design, and manufacturing).
  • Key trends and challenges faced by the semiconductor industry, such as:
  • Technological advancements (AI chips, advanced packaging, automation)
  • Global supply chain disruptions
  • Talent shortages and skills gaps
  • Increasing global competition

The objectives and purpose of conducting a strategic case study on a Malaysian semiconductor company.

Each group will consist of the same member of group as assignment 1 and 2.

The topic for the review writing will be given in the class.

The review report not more than 3,000 words, excluding references.   The references should follow APA format.  

General Instructions for all Group:  

The group must prepare a written report for assignments 1, 2, and review writing (1.5 spaced; font size 12) for the given task. The presenting group may use PowerPoint and any other presentation materials to facilitate the presentation and understanding of the topic. The presentation slides also have to be submitted based on the stated date line. The Turnitin similarity must be less than 15%. For evaluation criteria, please see the rubric for presentation and the rubric for content assessment (written report).
