The subject focuses on various experimental and non-experimental research designs to address differing research questions. In relation to these designs, appropriate descriptive and univariate inferential statistics are used to analyse and interpret data in order to answer research hypothesis.
This subject is designed to give opportunities to students to understand the research process, problems formulation to review of literature, sample and sampling, research methods, data collection and analysis, and report writing.
The main objective of this subject is to teach students to investigate and develop solution answers to psychological issues by systematic research design, identifying appropriate methods of data collection, and analyse quantitative data. The subject will focus on designing of studies to answer research questions. Students would be required to identify, use, and interpret appropriate statistical analyses to answer research questions. This subject would also train students to write research reports in a systematic manner.
Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to:
Students learn through face-to-face lectures and workshops, group and individual assignments, and formative assessments in class.
Lectures are delivered with MS Power point as visual aid. Each lecture covers discussions to develop competency in designing and carrying out research as well as the appropriate statistics to use based on the research design and the hypotheses and research questions.
Workshops are designed to supplement lectures and mainly consist of designing research studies and statistical analyses.
Although the lectures and workshops are based on material from the textbooks, you will need to read the textbook as well to gain a full understanding of the subject matter. Please do not just rely on notes from the lecture slides!
Students are required to maintain an overall minimum attendance of 80%. A formal warning letter will be issued for students who do not meet the minimum attendance requirement. Students are required to check into iCheckIn for each lesson.
It is the students’ responsibility to inform the subject lecturer of their absence. In cases where absence was due to special circumstances (e.g. illness or family bereavement), students are expected to inform the subject lecturer as soon as possible so that the absence records can be updated. Students who have been absent due to mitigating circumstances for significantly prolonged period should apply for deferment of studies for the semester.
All personal travel should be planned only after the semester ends and the final exam timetable has been released. Please note that no changes to exam schedules, quizzes, or assessment submission deadlines will be permitted due to travel conflicts. Kindly plan accordingly to ensure your availability for all academic requirements.
Plagiarism is defined as taking information from some other source or author without acknowledging the source and making it seem as if the work is that of your own. This is a very serious crime in an academic setting where credit must be given to the original author where it is due. The act of plagiarism is treated as similar to copying. In addition, the act of allowing a classmate to copy your work is considered as encouraging plagiarism. The penalty for plagiarism would be in accordance with the policy stated in the Sunway University Student Handbook for Undergraduate Programmes. If you are found to have committed any act of plagiarism, immediate action will be taken.
It is prohibited to utilize any generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, for composing your practical reports. While you may employ these tools for grammatical checks, generating any content pertinent to your assessment is strictly prohibited.
You are required to submit the “AI Transparency Page” document (can be found on eLearn) along with your reports.
Completion of all coursework assignments is compulsory. Coursework submitted after the deadline, or after any period of extension granted will be regarded as a FAIL or awarded a ZERO. If you have any mitigating circumstances that prevent you from submitting your assignment in time, please request for extension, with proper justification(s) at least 2 working days in advance via email to the subject lecturer.
Please make sure to back up all your work regularly. A sudden laptop malfunction will not be accepted as a valid reason for requesting an extension.
Students are assessed 100% by coursework. The Practical Report 1 and Quiz are considered continuous assessments, while Practical Report 2 is considered as the final assessment. Students must pass both the continuous and final assessments to pass the whole subject (earn at least 40%). Details of each component are stated below.
This is an assignment that consists of 2 parts: Practical Report 1 (group of 2 to 3) and Practical Report 2 (individual). This research project aims to provide practical experience in literature review, data collection, data analysis and report writing. A list of variables is provided on eLearn, and each group is required to formulate their research questions and/or objectives and hypotheses based on the given variables. Details are as follows:

You are required to work in a group of 2 to 3 students to design a psychology-related research project and write a practical report about your research. The research project should have at least two hypotheses where Pearson correlation and independent-samples t-test will be used to answer these hypotheses respectively. This report should consist of reviews of past literature to support the developed research hypotheses. The practical report must be presented according to APA 7th edition format.The report would need to have the following sections:
