Assessment Overview
This assignment requires you to undertake a group research project on a topic relevant to business and management. Numbers of members in each group may range between 3-6 students. You will identify a business problem, formulate research questions and research objectives, theoretical framework, hypotheses, and collect and analyze primary or secondary data using either qualitative or quantitative methods. Your final submission will be a research report of with a word limit between 10,000 – 15,000 words.
Assessment Requirements
You are expected to:
1. Chapter 1: Introduction
- Background: Provide a general overview of the topic within the business/management context. Describe recent trends, developments, or issues that make this topic timely and relevant.
- Problem statement: Clearly articulate the core issue or gap your research addresses. Explain why this problem matters to practitioners, policymakers, or scholars. Provide evidence or data (if available) to justify the significance of the problem.
- Research Questions: List the key questions your study will answer.
- Research Objectives: State what the study aims to accomplish.
- Scope : Define the boundaries of your research (e.g., geographic location, industry, timeframe, sample).
- Significance: Explain the significance of addressing the problems to stakeholders (e.g., businesses, employees, policymakers).
- Briefly provide terminology of terms used throughout the project and outline the organization of what each chapter of the report will cover to guide the reader.
2. Chapter 2: Literature review
- Conduct a Literature Review. Review and synthesize relevant academic and industry sources to establish the theoretical foundation of your study.
Read at least 30 Scopus/WoS journal articles for literature review.
Select key journal articles from Scopus/WoS Q1,Q2, or Q3 journals only. All references (except seminal papers) must be within last 5 years (2019-2025).
Theoretical Framework:
- You are required to identify the underlying theory(ies) from past literature. Justify the selected theory(ies) for the study.
- You may extend the theoretical framework from past studies as published in high-tier journal articles.
- Quantitative: Include specific independent variables to enhance the original theoretical framework. It is necessary to provide evidence from the literature and depth of insights to justify how the suggested variable shall have a significant impact on the dependent variable.
- Qualitative: Conceptual framework of the relevant dimensions based on literature should be presented.
Hypotheses / Propositions:
- Quantitative: Present past studies / evidence that supports hypotheses and their directions
- Qualitative: You may present propositions (if any)
3. Chapter 3: Research Methodology
Choose either a qualitative or quantitative method.
- Quantitative: Choose the survey approach
- Qualitative: Choose either the case study approach or the action research approach.
Justify your research design, sampling method, data collection instruments (e.g., interviews, surveys), and ethical considerations.
Questionnaire development: You are advised to adopt or adapt the existing measurement items from past research. Sources of the items must be cited. Design a questionnaire using a Likert scale.
Interview question development: You are advised to devise between 5-8 interview questions.
Quantitative Data Collection
- The survey can be conducted online through online survey tools, an official email, or in a face-to-face setting.
- Minimum sample size should be based on G*Power or 100 respondents (whichever is higher). Source: https://download.cnet.com/g-power
- In all instances, it is necessary to inform and obtain verbal or written consent from the participant before beginning the survey.
- Assure participants of their confidentiality or anonymity.
- Be clear in stating the purpose of the research and how the information obtained shall be used for research purposes only.
- Act with the highest level of professionalism for all survey correspondence.
Qualitative Data Collection:
- Collect primary data using a semi-structured interview method.
- A minimum of 10 respondents is recommended.
Data Analysis
- Quantitative: Employ statistical techniques using software like SPSS.
- Qualitative: Conduct thematic analysis using tools such as NVivo or manual coding.
4. Chapter 4: Analysis & Results
Present the findings of your research and provide an analysis of your research objectives, questions, or hypotheses. The goal is to demonstrate how the collected data addresses your research questions and to interpret these findings in a meaningful manner.
Quantitative Data Analysis:
- Describe the sample characteristics (e.g., demographics, number of respondents).
- Mention response rates and data cleaning steps.
- Descriptive Statistics: Present key measures (e.g., mean, median, standard deviation) using tables and charts. Provide summary statistics for each variable.
- Inferential Statistics: Present hypothesis testing results (e.g., t-tests, regression, correlation). Indicate significance levels (e.g., p-values) and effect sizes.
- Use appropriate statistical visuals (e.g., scatter plots, bar charts).
- Interpretation of Results: Explain what the results mean about your research questions or hypotheses.
- Indicate if the hypotheses are supported or not supported.
Qualitative Data Analysis:
- Provide descriptive details of the participants, interviews, focus groups, or documents analyzed.
- Thematic Analysis: Structure the results by research objectives / questions. Present codes and themes that emerged from your data. Explain how the themes address the research objectives / questions.
- Use quotes or excerpts to illustrate each theme.
- Discuss the depth and richness of insights gained.
- Acknowledge any conflicting or unexpected results.
- Summarize patterns and relationships between themes.
- Use appropriate visuals from qualitative software tools
5. Chapter 5: Discussion & Conclusion
- Interpret your findings concerning the literature and discuss their practical and theoretical implications.
- Summarize key findings and suggest actionable strategies for business stakeholders.
- Compare results with past studies. Indicate if the results are similar or different and provide a reason. Provide literature to support your discussion.
6. Each group member must participate in the discussion of analysis, findings and implications to business. This must be video recorded and the video link to be submitted to the Supervisor via email. This video content will be graded for MLO2.
7. Draft of Chapter 1, 2 and 3 must be uploaded in canvas by week 4 and chapter 4 & 5 by week 6 for supervisor to evaluate and give feedback for improvement before final submission on week 7.
