  • Font MUST be in BLACK ONLY, COLOUR is allowed for figures. Use of colour in report will not bring you more marks.

To analyze how fundamental laws of electromagnetism and electronics are applied in real-world engineering systems.

Task 1: Energy Storage & Environmental Protection (Electrostatics & Capacitance)

Industrial Application: Explain the theory of Electrostatic Precipitators used in factory chimneys. How is Coulomb’s Law applied to remove pollutants from smoke?

Medical/Emergency Tech: Discuss the role of capacitors in Heart Defibrillators. Explain the theory of rapid energy discharge and why a capacitor is used instead of a standard battery.

Touchscreen Tech: Briefly explain the difference between resistive and capacitive touchscreens in smartphones.

Task 2: Power Generation & Motion (Magnetism & DC Circuits)

Electric Motors: Explain the theory of the Lorentz Force and how it is used to convert electrical energy into mechanical work in DC motors.

Medical Imaging: Describe the application of superconductive magnets in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Explain why a high-strength uniform magnetic field is required.

Circuit Protection: Explain the theoretical operation of a Circuit Breaker or fuse in a domestic DC distribution system to prevent thermal runaway.

Task 3: The Power Grid & Signal Processing (AC Circuits)

The National Grid: Explain why Transformers are essential for AC power transmission. Use the theory of Mutual Induction to explain why we step up voltage for long distances.

Wireless Communication: Describe how RLC Resonant Circuits are used in radio receivers to “tune” into specific frequencies.

Power Factor Correction: Explain why industries must manage their “Power Factor” (the phase difference between V and I) to avoid wasting energy.

Task 4: The Digital Revolution (Semiconductors, PN Junctions & BJTs)

Sustainable Energy: Explain the theory of the Photovoltaic Effect in solar cells. How does a PN junction convert light directly into electricity?

Light Generation: Discuss the physics of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)—specifically, how electron-hole recombination at a junction produces photons.

Information Technology: Explain how a Bipolar Junction Transistor acts as a digital switch. Describe its role as the fundamental “building block” of computer processors and logic gates.
