Cranes are commonly used in construction. Cranes are used to lift and lower materials and also move materials horizontally. Consider a tower crane with a 75ft arm (S) and a maximum load capacity ofΒ 5000
Ib (P). The response of the arm can be analyzed as a cantilever beam shown in Figure 1 with W the uniform
load, S the span, P the load, and L the location of load P.
Figure 1: A cantilever beam with a concentrated load, P and the uniform load, W
The moment (M) at the fixed end can be computed as follows:
π = π€π2 /2 + ππΏ
The flexure formula is used herein to approximately assess the performance of the crane cantilever since the cantilever is commonly constructed as a truss (or frame). The stress (π) due to the bending moment (M) can be expressed as follows:
π = ππ /πΌ
In which π (=10 in) is the distance from the neutral axis to the extreme fibre of the beam, and πΌ is the moment of inertia of the cross-section. The probabilistic characteristics of the parameters needed in this assignment are listed in Table 1. The craneβs material has a yield strength, π.Β The failure probability (ππ) can be determined as follows
ππ = π(π β π < 0)
Table 1: Parameters of the crane and their probabilistic characteristics
| Parameter | Description | Mean | Standard Deviation | Distribution type |
| π³ | Location of the load (distance from the fixed end) | 60 ft | Β 20 Β ft | Β lognormal |
| πΎ | Uniform load | 65 Ib/ft | 15 Ib/ft | normal |
| π° | Moment of inertia of steel section | 1200 in4 | Β 100 in4 | lognormal |
| π | Yield Strength | 60ksi | 15 ksi | normal |
You are required to perform the tasks using any statistics tools as follows:
The report should include a title page (including TARUMT logo, and course code), marking rubric, Plagiarism Statement form, problem description, objectives, methodology, detailed results and discussion (with citations), conclusion, reference and appendix (if any).
Many students face difficulty while completing this Engineering Statistics assignment, as sometimes generating random variables and plotting distributions is confusing, and other times calculating stress, bending moment, and probability of failure becomes challenging.
