Question 1
BYD, one of China’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade. Originally established as a battery manufacturer in 1995, the company later expanded into the automotive industry and has become one of the world’s largest EV producers.
Recognising the increasing demand for electric vehicles in Southeast Asia, BYD identified the region as a strategic market for international expansion. Instead of relying solely on exports from China, the company decided to establish manufacturing operations within ASEAN.
Thailand was selected as BYD’s first regional manufacturing hub due to several strategic advantages. The country has a well-established automotive industry, experienced suppliers, modern transportation infrastructure, supportive government policies, and a strategic location that provides easy access to other ASEAN markets. In 2024, BYD officially opened its manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand, with an annual production capacity of approximately 150,000 vehicles.
Beyond manufacturing, BYD adopted a localisation strategy by introducing different vehicle models that matched local consumer preferences and investing in employee training and technology transfer. The company also expanded its dealership network across Southeast Asia and collaborated with local governments to support EV infrastructure development, such as charging stations and technical workforce training.
As a result, BYD quickly became one of the best-selling EV brands in Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. However, despite its success, the company continues to face several challenges. These include intense competition from global and local automakers, differences in consumer preferences across countries, foreign exchange fluctuations, varying government regulations, and the need to adapt to different cultural and business environments.
As an International Business Consultant, you have been invited to evaluate BYD’s regional expansion strategy and provide recommendations for sustaining its competitive advantage in Southeast Asia.
