In this exercise,

you will have the opportunity to apply some of the information learned over the few weeks of the module. Specifically, you will:

  • Use your knowledge of research objectives, type of data, and research designs to choose the correct statistical test.
  • Use SPSS to perform the chosen tests.
  • Think about the appropriate way of interpreting and presenting the results.

SECTION A: Coursework on t-test and ANOVA

Type in your answers electronically.  Handwritten work will not be accepted

A plant-based diet protects against chronic oxidative stress-related diseases. Plants contain variable amounts of antioxidants. It is known that plant antioxidants may contribute to beneficial health effects. According to the USDA, antioxidants remove free radicals from the body, which can run rampant and actually damage cells, causing serious illness. Many health professionals use them for treatments of stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. They have also been helpful in treating brain injury and may slow and even prevent the development of cancers.

Experiment 1:

The researchers wish to know the antioxidant content of oranges and papaya. Five samples each for oranges and papaya were randomly collected from different stores and analyzed for antioxidant content. The data obtained are presented in the table below. Using appropriate statistics test if the antioxidant activities of the two crops are different.

  1. What is the grouping variable/factor?
  2. what is the dependent variable?
  3. Is the research design independent or related?
  4. What sort of data is to be analyzed (nominal, ordinal, or scale)?

Experiment 2:

The table below is an outcome of the antioxidant concentration of four fruits randomly sampled from different stores. Using appropriate statistics, test, whether the antioxidant concentrations in the crops studied, are different from each other. Carry out normality and homogeneity of variance test.

  1. What is the dependent variable?
  2. What is the grouping variable/factor?
  3. What sort of data is to be analyzed (nominal, ordinal, or scale)?
  4. Is the research design independent or related?

Experiment 3:

The following data (30 observations) were obtained in a study examining the effect of temperature on the growth of the rice plant in terms of dry matter accumulation g per plant.

  1. What sort of data is to be analyzed (nominal, ordinal, or scale)?
  2. Which statistical test do you need to use (use the flow diagram provided)?
  3. Plot a scatter diagram predicting the relationship between the two variables understudy
  4. How would you present the findings of this analysis for publication?
